Charles Moses Waibi: Kigezi HomeBoyz FC’s Rising Star and Football Maestro
From the bustling streets of Nizam Road in Jinja City to dazzling football fans across Uganda, Charles Moses Waibi’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Currently a professional footballer with Kigezi HomeBoyz FC and an Engineering student at Kabale University, Waibi epitomizes talent, determination, and resilience.
Born on December 22, 2002, in Jinja City, Waibi began his academic journey at Salvation Army Nursery School in Tororo District before moving on to Iganga Boys Primary School, where his football journey took off. His talent was evident from a young age, earning him a soccer bursary and a place on his school team in Primary Four. He represented Iganga District in national competitions, amassing numerous accolades and certificates for his outstanding performances.
Waibi’s football dream gained further momentum during his secondary education. He began at St. Mary’s College Kitende but later transferred to Jinja Senior Secondary School, where he flourished on and off the pitch. In 2017, he led his school to a runner-up finish in the National Copa Coca-Cola Games. Despite balancing academics and football, Waibi’s commitment to excellence remained steadfast.
In May 2021, he rekindled his football aspirations through the Busoga Masaza Cup before joining Kabale University later that year. His immediate impact in the University Inter-Faculty Games earned him recognition as the youngest player of the tournament. This performance caught the eye of Coach Farouq Nsubuga, paving the way for his recruitment to Kigezi HomeBoyz FC during the 2021/22 season.
Waibi’s debut season with Kigezi HomeBoyz FC was nothing short of sensational. His 10 goals and 15 assists were instrumental in the club’s promotion to the FUFA Big League. He also bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for that season. His versatility on the pitch—capable of playing as a winger, forward, or attacking midfielder—has made him a key asset for the team.
Beyond his achievements with Kigezi HomeBoyz, Waibi has also excelled at Kabale University. During the recently concluded 2024 University Inter-Faculty Games, he won four accolades, including MVP of the tournament, Top Scorer (5 goals), and Most Talented Student.
Waibi attributes his football prowess to his parents, both of whom had a history in the sport. His father, Edward Waibi, was a celebrated goalkeeper, while his mother, Miriam Naigaga, played football in her youth. His younger cousin, Edrisah Waibi, is already making waves as a goalkeeper for Uganda’s U17 team.
With a proven track record in competitions such as the Ankole District Football Tournaments, where he represented Sheema District for two consecutive seasons, Waibi’s ambitions remain sky-high. He dreams of playing for the Uganda Cranes and top international clubs, inspired by local role model Denis Omedi and Brazilian legend Ronaldinho.
